As we roll out gigabit fiber at NorthPoint, we thought it would be fun to take a brief walk down memory lane and look at the evolution of our internet connection speeds over the past 20 years…
For those of us who remember the early days of the internet, today’s connection speeds are nothing short of a miracle. Just a few decades ago, we were waiting patiently for websites to load and watching the minutes turn to hours as we attempted to download files using a dial-up connection. And we were also hoping that nobody in our homes picked up the phone unwittingly, severing our tenuous connection and forcing us to start all over. Though connections were painfully slow, we were downloading smaller amounts of content containing mainly text and static images. Obviously, we were far off from streaming video and cloud-based apps: but as connection speeds increased, the internet as we know it changed accordingly.
Before broadband, many of us were coping with connection speeds of 56 Kilobits per second or lower. But today’s internet service providers offer download speeds in the tens of Megabits per second, and these providers are rushing to make gigabit connections available to their home and business customers. The rate of U.S. adults who used broadband connections at home jumped from 1% in 2000 to 65% this year, according to the Pew Research Center, illustrating both the desire to escape the limitations of dial-up and the demand for ever-increasing internet speeds.
Here’s another way to look at the evolution of our connection speeds: downloading a 1MB file on a 56 Kbps connection takes around two and a half minutes; the same 1MB file on a 1 Mbps is finished in 8 seconds; and a 10 Mbps connection means your 1MB file is ready in under one second.
High-speed internet is a prerequisite for any successful business: with a faster, more reliable connection, your business will enjoy improved productivity and communication. Let NorthPoint Executive Suites give you gigabit-speed fiber and everything else your business needs to thrive!
